coy family reunion

i always knew that my family would be spread far across the country. we grew up moving every couple of years and so, we honestly don't know what it's like to stay in one place. i'm surprised that i live in such close proximity to my parents. but well, my siblings make up for my surprise. one lives out the east coast, the other in so cal, another in the northwest. we're scattered. and we rarely get to all come together at once.

that's why this family reunion was such a big deal. and it was a blast! it was really important to me that we get some good family photos and so i decided that i would make sure that it happened. (for the pictures that i was in and couldn't take, my good friend christine came and helped out! i am so grateful and indebted to her for allowing me to be in my family photo!!)

here i am with my siblings. what a fun group! i am really lucky to have such awesome brothers, and a sister!

my mom and sister

eliana is almost 13 and is already taller than me... haha. i'm officially the shortest in the family (besides the grandkiddos)

greg is such a stud!

andrew and ann

3 is the magic number (and we are almost there!)

brad and meredith and their adorable family

chris and jillayne

and then the two people who started it all...

37 weeks- and a painted belly

just for clarification, i am actually 38+1 day along. the ticker on the right is correct... although a few of you have wondered where i am in this process simply because i post the weekly photos late (sometimes even 2 weeks later!). i'm sorry if this has caused confusion. but shooting with film for this project has left me waiting for the pictures. at any rate, i haven't yet taken week 38 but will do so soon. as for the special treat of week 37- here it is in all its glory! i hope you will enjoy!!

this week's photo was a total group effort. i couldn't have done it without the following individuals:

jenica- a fabulous artist and the one behind the paint on my belly.
alisha- an invaluable friend and incredibly talented photographer (who is currently photographing at the salt lake farmers market- large format polaroids people! she's AMAZING)
christine- a fearless friend and photographer, so generous and so talented
britton- my love, my support, the reason this project is possible

i'm not sure where i got it in my head that i wanted my belly painted... but somewhere, somehow it got there. i think it may have been mainly motivated by the desire to be photographed by alisha in a large-format 4x5 color polaroid. when i learned that she would have a booth at the farmer's market, i knew that i needed to make this happen. fortunately, for me, she knew jenica- who was more than willing and excited really to help make this a reality. jenica came, and with her mad skills made my belly into a canvas for her beautiful masterpiece. i chose to have her paint some of the fruits and veggies that i've photographed through this process. i loved the little final touches which she added. it was a sunny day at the market. so enjoyable, sitting there being painted.

after the painting was complete, alisha was so good as to capture the following 4x5 polaroids for me. her work is stunning. if you are in the salt lake area and want something to do on a saturday- seriously consider heading down to the market to have her photograph you. it won't be something you'd regret! and the best part- you get to walk away with print in hand. soooo beautiful!

pictures taken by alisha stamper

after the market, i headed south to meet up with christine. she had a few minutes and we found a nice little spot to snap a few more pictures...

pictures by christine olson

and then, finally... my sweet love assisted me in creating these images. he's such a good sport!

we are getting closer and closer to the arrival of sweet baby boy beckham... and i cannot wait. he's dropped... and so even though i can breathe much easier, i waddle like a duck even more now than ever! my little petite body is so uncomfortable and ready to get him out! but i am content to let him stay in as long as he needs to. yesterday's midwife appointment went well. it was the home visit. everything is as it should be! a perfect report. things are getting closer and closer. we are so excited. stay tuned, friends, for more updates, more photos and eventually a beautiful birth story :)

summer is for gathering together. time spent with family. sunshine and bubbles (especially when blown by 2-yr old nieces) :)

l-r: leslie, christine, sharon, and alisha, (missing one member- jessica)

some women have book club, others do play groups. i hang out with my photo peeps. that's my community and i LOVE it. each one of the ladies in this picture have an incredible eye and ability to capture beautiful images. we have formed together and are part of a collaborative group. we call ourselves f8. we meet monthly (sometimes more) and we talk all things photo. when i come home from our meetings, my husband often asks me what there is to talk about for 4+ hours. i laugh. if only he could be a fly on the wall for a few minutes, he'd realize that we are all photo-nerds. we talk every photography, cameras, equipment, business, organization... you name it. mainly it's a support group where we push each other to new heights and where we share share share our love of the fabulous medium of photography. we all shoot film too. it's kind of our thing. not that there's anything wrong with digital. most of us have professional digital cameras too... but there's something so raw and authentic about the process of capturing images on film. i love it. the other thing i absolutely love about this group of ladies: we are all great friends. there's no petty competition between us. no drama. just pure fun. our husbands even like each other. here's proof:

anyway, at one of our last meetings we went for a nice little walk. here are just a few images that were captured from the evening:

what kind of communities are you grateful that you're a part of?

happy birthday america!

this year, for the 4th of july, my whole family was in town. it was an awesome day! filled with fun, great food, parades, fireworks- you name it! i really really enjoyed it. being 8 months pregnant doesn't really make life easier, but despite the swelling due to the heat and the utter exhaustion from making dinner (cafe-rio style), i was filled with joy because we were all together and having such a fantastic time. here are just a few pictures from the day:

@ the parade...

our lovely meal...

this man knows how to grill chicken... even on the most pathetic of grills! :)

a tasty patriotic cake inspired by pinterest! yay! and step-by-step instructions here.

captain america!

when i saw these guys running around, i couldn't help myself- i had to take a picture! they were advertising for the company DREAM DINNERS. turns out dream dinners is a really great program that makes it super easy to make dinner each night! Plus it's a great way for me to fill my freezer with meals in preparation for baby! yay! i am actually going to go down and do so today. (did i mention i'm in full nesting mode?!) last night britton and i fixed one of their meals (which we got to try for free) called chateau chicken with almond butter sauce. it was yuuuummmmmmy!

rooftop concert series in provo

if you've never been to utah, you're seriously missing out. there are so many things to do in this great state. as an alaskan girl, i never thought that i'd be advocating another state besides the last frontier... but well, here i am- a total utah transplant. a utah resident. married to a man who definitely loves utah. he was california-born, but basically spent the majority of his growing up years in utah county and frankly, he loves it here. he doesn't just love all of utah though. there is escalante, moab, zions... all pretty incredible places! and then there's the little cities that gave me reason to make fun of the kids at college that were from them. cities like orem, utah. "what a hookey place to be from," i thought. it's not salt lake nor is it the wonderful provo, made famous by the byu cougars in all their sports glory.

but here i am, not far from orem and married to a guy who will tell me over and over again how and why orem is one of the greatest cities on earth.

well now it's my turn. he's right. orem is pretty great. it's close to everything. there's loads to do and they sure keep it clean and pretty. it's modern and convenient. and quiet (especially on the sabbath). i like it here. the weather is nice and the fruit trees... oh man, that's something we didn't have a lot of in alaska. fresh peaches picked right off the tree are one of my obsessions. utah brings out the domestic in me.

and yet... there's more culture here than one might suppose at first glance. and that's another reason why this place is so great. right next to orem is the lovely provo, and believe it or not- provo has quite the music scene. ever heard of neon trees? well they are a lovely band that has done quite well for themselves. a band that got their start on the stages of provo in awesome venues like velour. provo knows how to breed good music. if you don't believe me than check out this link- to the provo rooftop concert series. we're talking FREE MUSIC people! and lots of it. once a month the best of this area gathers together to share in their love and appreciation of live music. it's sublime. and it's another reason why being here is so delightful.

and so, on the 1st of july, i gratefully accepted an invitation to attend and choose to capture just a few select images from my time soaking in the wonderful music of the beatles, recreated by some of utah's best and most loved musicians. GOOD TIMES.

some of you (in utah and out) may be familiar with c.jane- she's an avid blogger and writer and one of the big reasons (if not the reason) why this concert series even exists. here's a pic of her and her man. if you don't already follow her, you really should check out what she has to say here. be warned: you might really like what you read and be hooked :)

other things to love about this concert series... there are vendors set up with lots of good food and treats. mmmm! isn't there something so good about fair-type food?

and finally... one of my most favorite moments from the evening: i really enjoy photographing "strangers" just people who don't really know me that well and who weren't planning on having their likeness captured. there's something so thrilling about seeing someone in their element and then asking them to allow me to capture them on film. when i saw robbie connolly, chillin with his beautiful wife and awesome dog- i couldn't resist. how 101 dalmations is this moment? now, robbie is a stranger to me... sure i know he's part of the awesome group, fictionist. but i haven't ever spoken to him personally. thankfully for me, he's good friends with kaneischa (a very important person in the provo music scene) and thus the introduction was made and the following images captured.

i'm not so sure if i will be in attendance at the upcoming show in august... since baby beckham is due to make his appearance and who knows what state i'll be in! but if i'm able, you all know one place where you'll find me. sitting on a lawn chair, soaking in the warmth of the beautiful music from a rooftop in provo.
